Depending on who you ask, architecture can be defined in a number of different ways. Dictionary.com states that architecture is the “profession of designing buildings, open area communities and a range of artificial constructions” by the process of planning, designing and construction.
Do you know who the first known architect is? Whilst this may not be the first EVER architect in time, Imhotep is the first identified architect in history. He lived way before our time, in 2600 BCE, serving an Egyptian Pharaoh, Djoser. Imhotep was the man who designed what is known as the first most extensive stone structure in history, the pyramids, leading on to inspire the more extravagant pyramids built later on in life.
You may ask, why is architecture important? Why is it such a big deal to have good architecture in our vicinity? Well, there could be a number of reasons, but we will just show you a few.
You may not have thought that architecture would benefit the economy, but it sure does. Buildings are designed and constructed all the time and it is said, by DesignBlendz.com that “the best architectural designs are those that cost little and still manage to drive economic flow”. Think about the number of businesses that can thrive with great architectured buildings for offices!
It’s true what they say, you know? “If you look good, you feel good.”
This reigns true for communities too. Studies show that places with good architecture and design, are more likely to showcase a stronger community, with thriving businesses and healthier neighbourhoods.
With good architecture, comes significant progress. Without progress, areas would still be stuck in the same rut. It is important for us to move with the times and grow as a community, adopting a healthier lifestyle and habits that come with upgrading our infrastructure.
To become an architect, there is a certain amount of education and experience that you would need to complete in order to get the qualifications. As well as this, you’ll need some pretty specific skills, including:
Wondering what GCSEs you’ll need to get on that university course? Well, it all differs depending on the university. More often than not, uni’s look for a mix of humanities/arts and maths/science, so it would be a good idea to have a bit of both. Make sure you have at least a C in both maths and English GCSEs. A-level courses that you take, would have to be a bit more specific to the job. Including maths, science, art or design.
Architecture is an industry that is forever growing and changing. Without them, there would be no places to live, work, play, worship, learn, shop, eat and the list goes on. They contribute to most, if not all, of society, in a lot more ways than is imaginable.
